Singapore's digital banks and wallets can sit side by side in one app, but they run on different licences. A digital bank holds a MAS bank licence, which lets it take deposits and lend, and those deposits are insured up to SGD 100,000 per person at each bank. A wallet is run by a payment institution, whose licence covers e-money and payments. That balance is e-money, not a deposit, so it is safeguarded and not insured.

What the four licences mean

Expand to read every figure.

Sources and how the figures were worked out
  • Audited accounts for 2025 (GXS, MariBank, Trust, ANEXT), read 21 Oct 2026.
  • GXS and MariBank are the Singapore bank alone. Their groups also hold banks in Malaysia and the Philippines (GXS, MariBank).
  • Every earnings and cost figure is a percentage of the bank's average assets, the average of its opening and closing total assets. Whose money it is and where it sits use the closing balance sheet. Owners is total equity, the owners' money left after past losses, and Other is the rest, mainly money due to the parent and other liabilities (GXS, MariBank, Trust, ANEXT).
  • It earns is interest income plus fees and other income, which is total income. It pays out is interest expense, which for GXS, MariBank and ANEXT may include interest on funding from a parent, since only Trust splits deposit interest in its notes (Trust, note 14). It keeps is what it earns less what it pays out.
  • Costs are operating expenses and provisions for bad loans. Paid by earnings is the part of the costs that what it keeps pays for, and the shortfall is the rest, which is the loss each bank reports for the year. The steps add up to it, apart from rounding (GXS, MariBank, Trust, ANEXT).
  • New money from the owners is the change in share capital and other equity instruments between the 2024 and 2025 statements of financial position. GXS went from SGD 1,089.6 million to SGD 1,393.1 million (GXS), MariBank from SGD 555.0 million to SGD 775.0 million (MariBank), and Trust from SGD 695.0 million to SGD 720.0 million plus SGD 60.0 million of other equity instruments (Trust). ANEXT's share capital stayed at SGD 675.0 million (ANEXT). The owners' share is total equity over total assets.
  • The reasons are read from the same figures. GXS works under MAS's tighter limits on deposits and lending (Grab 20-F, MAS). ANEXT's customer loans fell from SGD 847 million to SGD 636 million over 2025 (ANEXT).

Each bank keeps 1.4% to 3.2% of what it holds after paying interest and spends 2.8% to 5.4% running it, before any bad loans (GXS, MariBank, Trust, ANEXT). Trust comes closest to covering its costs. GXS is furthest, with costs 3 times what it keeps and MAS's tighter limits on how fast it can grow (Grab 20-F, MAS).

The owners cover the gap. In 2025 they put in about SGD 303 million at GXS, SGD 220 million at MariBank and SGD 85 million at Trust, which is SGD 25 million of shares and SGD 60 million of perpetual securities (GXS, MariBank, Trust). ANEXT's owners added nothing, and its equity fell by the SGD 50 million it lost (ANEXT). The owners' money is 7% to 32% of what these banks hold, and it is the cushion that takes the losses.

The figures are for the Singapore bank alone, from audited accounts. The wallets publish no figure for what they hold or earn, as each wallet card on the map above notes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a digital bank account and a wallet?

A bank account is a deposit at a licensed bank, and it is insured. A wallet balance is e-money from a payment institution, and it is safeguarded but not insured.

  • Who regulates it Banks hold a MAS bank licence. GrabPay, ShopeePay and Dash are run by major payment institutions, which MAS licenses under the Payment Services Act (MAS directory, MAS FAQs).
  • Digital bank types MAS has licensed two digital full banks and two digital wholesale banks, GXS and MariBank, then ANEXT and Green Link (MAS). Trust runs digitally under a regular full bank licence (Trust launch release).
  • Same group Grab runs GXS Bank and GrabPay, and Sea runs MariBank and ShopeePay, so one app can hold both kinds of money (Grab 20-F, MariBank governance report, MAS directory).
  • Wallet inside a bank PayLah! looks like a wallet, but DBS treats it as a bank account (DBS account terms).
  • How it is protected Bank deposits are insured by SDIC. Wallet money is protected by safeguarding rules, which is a different promise (SDIC member list, MAS FAQs).

They keep the gap between what they earn on deposits and what they pay on them. In 2025 that gap did not cover the cost of running any of the four banks with public accounts.

  • What it keeps After paying interest, each bank kept 1.4% to 3.2% of what it holds in 2025 (GXS, MariBank, Trust, ANEXT).
  • What it costs Operations cost 2.8% to 5.4% of what each holds, and bad loans another 0.8% to 2.3% (GXS, MariBank, Trust, ANEXT).
  • The 2025 result The 2025 losses were SGD 53.5 million at Trust, SGD 132.1 million at GXS, SGD 55.6 million at MariBank and SGD 49.8 million at ANEXT (Trust, GXS, MariBank, ANEXT).
  • Who covers it The owners cover the gap. In 2025 they put in about SGD 303 million at GXS, SGD 220 million at MariBank and SGD 85 million at Trust (GXS, MariBank, Trust).
  • Outlook Grab expects its Financial Services segment, which includes GXS, to turn profitable on adjusted EBITDA in the second half of 2026 (Grab results, Grab remarks).
Details

Grab's guidance covers its whole Financial Services segment, not GXS alone (Grab remarks).

The figures are for the Singapore bank alone, from audited accounts. Interest paid for GXS, MariBank and ANEXT may include interest on funding from a parent, since only Trust splits deposit interest in its notes (Trust, note 14).

How does a wallet make money when it pays no interest?

The terms of GrabPay and Dash let the operator keep the interest on the pooled money. What a wallet earns on payments is not published.

  • Who keeps the interest Grab's terms say Grab "may receive interest" on the money it holds (Grab terms). The interest on a Dash account goes to SingCash, not to the user (Dash terms).
  • What users get GrabPay, ShopeePay and Dash pay the user no interest (Grab terms, ShopeePay terms, Dash terms).
  • What is reported Grab reports its Financial Services segment as one figure, USD 134 million of revenue in the second quarter of 2026, and does not split out GrabPay (Grab results).
Details

GrabPay, ShopeePay and Dash do not publish how much they hold or what they earn on payments, so what the interest brings in cannot be worked out.

Where does my money sit when I top up a wallet?

Not in the operator's own account. It has to be safeguarded, usually in a pooled trust account at a bank, and a few wallets use a bank guarantee or undertaking instead.

  • The rule MAS requires the operator to safeguard what users load (MAS FAQs). The terms of the wallets show three ways, a trust account, a bank guarantee and a bank undertaking.
  • Trust accounts GrabPay, ShopeePay and Dash keep users' money in pooled trust accounts, together with other customers' money (Grab terms, ShopeePay terms, Dash terms).
  • Which bank holds it Grab's security page names UOB, though its terms name no bank (security page). YouTrip's terms name four banks (YouTrip terms).
  • No trust account DBS, OCBC and UOB have undertaken to be fully liable for NETS balances (NETS agreement). YouTrip adds a bank guarantee for some currencies (YouTrip terms).
  • Balance cap The law lets a wallet hold SGD 20,000 per user at most, and operators set lower caps, SGD 5,000 at GrabPay and Dash (MAS FAQs, Grab terms, Dash terms).
Details

The terms of ShopeePay and Dash do not name the bank that holds the money. Grab's terms name no bank either, and its security page names UOB (Grab terms, security page).

Which balances are insured, and how much is covered?

Singapore dollar deposits at SDIC member banks, up to SGD 100,000 per person at each bank. Wallet balances and the two digital wholesale banks are not covered.

  • Which banks GXS, MariBank, Trust and DBS are covered (SDIC member list, Trust).
  • How much The SGD 100,000 applies per person at each bank, across all savings, fixed deposit and current accounts there. Money at different banks is covered separately (SDIC FAQs).
  • Which currencies Foreign currency deposits are not covered (the Act).
  • PayLah! balance A PayLah! balance is a DBS bank deposit, so it counts toward DBS's SGD 100,000 along with savings and current accounts (DBS account terms, list).
  • What is not covered MAS says e-money is "not bank deposits and therefore not protected by deposit insurance" (MAS FAQs). ANEXT and Green Link are not on the member list (SDIC member list).
Details

The per-customer deposit cap at each bank is set in the app and not published.

DBS's list of insured deposits is DBS's own statement. It was not checked against a list from SDIC (list).

What happens to my money if a bank or wallet fails?

At an insured bank, SDIC repays up to SGD 100,000 per person and no claim is needed. A wallet balance depends on how it is safeguarded, and users may share a shortfall.

  • A bank fails Depositors do not need to file a claim. SDIC pays by PayNow or cashier's order, and aims to pay most within seven working days after MAS activates the payout (SDIC FAQs).
  • Above SGD 100,000 For amounts over SGD 100,000, SDIC submits a claim to the liquidator on the depositor's behalf, and the liquidator reports the outcome (SDIC FAQs).
  • A wallet fails Their terms say GrabPay, ShopeePay and Dash users may share a shortfall if the bank holding the pooled money fails (Grab terms, ShopeePay terms, Dash terms).
  • Extra backing DBS, OCBC and UOB are fully liable for NETS balances (NETS agreement). Singtel has guaranteed MAS 40% of GXS's deposit liabilities, and Grab must indemnify bank customers against shortfalls in deposits at GXS (Singtel statements, Grab 20-F).
Details

The seven working days is SDIC's target, and it starts once MAS activates the payout (SDIC FAQs).
